Become a Descanso Volunteer
Descanso Gardens invites you to join more than 300 dedicated member volunteers who offer much time and talent to the garden experience. Contributions by volunteers are crucial to all aspects of the Gardens, including public education as well as gardening.
Come, bring your energy and enthusiasm and your green thumb as your touch makes things bloom even brighter. Discover new planting methods and make new friends. Or work with children and share in the joy of discovery. Participate in a variety of ways at special events. These and more volunteer opportunities enhance the experience of Descanso Gardens membership. Volunteer as an annual for short-term participation, or as a perennial for year-round involvement. Adult Volunteers
No prior training or experience is required to volunteer at Descanso Gardens:
Gardening
Harvest Garden: Guide special needs students in hands-on gardening experiences. Tuesday to Friday: 9 :30 to 11:30 a.m.
Plant Propagation Nursery: Propagate plant material. Assist with two plant sale fund-raisers per year. Enjoy working in a fun environment and learn about many different types of plants. Tuesdays: 9 a.m. to noon.
Rose Garden: Assist staff with grooming roses, planting companion plants, mulching and propagating. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday: 9 a.m.-noon.
Public Programs
Classes and Lectures: Assist with check-in at gardening lectures & classes. Perform hosting duties before & during lectures. Events throughout the year.
Festivals and Event Support: Decorate, organize, gather supplies, or assist with class registration. Before and during major festivals.
Other Activities
Gift Shop: Assist the shop managers with displays of merchandise and customer sales. Hours available daily.
Member Table: Greet visitors at the membership table and provide information on membership benefits. Hours available weekends plus weekdays during special events.
Wedding Host/Hostess: Assist the Descanso wedding coordinators in greeting & directing the arrival of vendors, wedding party and guests. Hours available afternoons and evenings on weekends.
Crafts: Create handmade crafts to be sold at Holiday Show. Wednesdays: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Enchanted Railroad: Ticket taker greets guests and sells tickets. The conductor rides on the caboose with passengeters. Weekend mornings and afternoons.
Student Volunteers
The following opportunities are available for students (ages 14-18)
Festival and Event Support: Decorate, organize, gather supplies, or assist with class registration. Before and during major festivals.
Enchanted Railroad: Conductor rides the caboose on an electric or gas train with passengers. Hours available weekend mornings and afternoons.
Gift Shop: Assist the shop managers with displays of merchandise and customer sales. Hours available daily.
Wedding Host/Hostess: Assist the Descanso wedding coordinators in greeting & directing the arrival of vendors, wedding party and guests. Hours available afternoons and evenings on weekends.
